…. the colours of life with my kids

From the drafts. Edited today to add Adi’s creation ๐Ÿ™‚

The quilling spree continues! This time she was not inspired enough to make ornaments like before. Instead, she wanted to try her hand at advanced techniques and was expecting me to get her the tools for that. She also complained that she had quilling strips in boring colours. whatever that means!!

Somehow, I did not see the need for advanced tools till she honed her skills a bit more. I convinced her to make use of all the strips that she has and make some stuff, anything that interests her. So, she’s been at it since past few days.

Here’s a card that she made incorporating the different patterns..

Bouquet of flowers

Adi is also inspired !! This is what I found when I came home today ๐Ÿ™‚

Work in progress.. pretty aint it ๐Ÿ™‚

From the drafts…

As I might have mentioned before, I have not been a physical activities or a sports type person for much of my life. That kind of changed a few years back when I started learning dance. Then came yoga which I learnt/practiced for some amount of time, followed by swimming classes last summer.

This year, with onset of spring, we started playing badminton. The kids were excited and sis too had been wanting to start a routine. And so we bought the rackets and cork and played in the evenings when we could make time. It was fun and felt really good to be able to play. Ammu and Adi loved it too. But sadly, it all stopped when summer vacations began. Increase in work load and the soaring temperatures didnt help a bit. We did carry the rackets and had a few fun sessions while at Ooty though ๐Ÿ™‚

Amidst all this, badminton tournament was organized at office and in a totally offhanded manner i said i would participate and my friend nominated my name as a partner. It felt weird but also interesting. I even went for practice one day and managed to get nominated for mixed doubles too! Its another matter though that it got postponed and I’d have to withdraw nomination as I had other plans in place for the new dates. Worse part is the tournament got postponed again due to unavoidable reasons.

Now, that the weather is cooler these days I’ve been thinking of playing during the mornings but sadly that hasn’t materialized yet. I’m hoping we’ll get to it next week onward, and continue for the rest of the vacation – a week and a half! Also, hoping that I’ll find partners and be available to play on the tournament dates that will be finalized. Keeping fingers crossed ๐Ÿ™‚

Update: Haven’t been able to get to playing yet. Maybe this week onwards… ๐Ÿ˜ The tournament dates are finalized and I hope I’ll be able to participate.

N is for nail art

From the drafts… after having waited in vain for some pics !

Ammu has always been fascinated by nail colour. Come weekends or holidays her first request would be to apply nail colour and mehendi !! And boy! she would be the happiest when I gave her the green signal ๐Ÿ˜€

There was a time a couple of years ago when she’d become so obsessed with nail colour, she would apply remove apply remove until she felt satisfied with the choice of colour. I had to resort to hiding anything nail related ๐Ÿ˜ฆ She even went to the extent of taking the nail enamel to the bathroom so she could avoid scrutiny. I was shocked when I learnt of this. Later I decided to just let her be and gave her access to all the stuff. Thankfully, slowly she got out of that habit.

But, of course, her love for nail colour is still very strong. Now, also into nail art since almost an year or more. She also downloaded some game that allows her to paint and decorate nails!

On one occasion she was bold enough to compliment a neighbour for her nail art. And, not surprisingly, she was invited to have her nails painted too!! She knows quite a bit about nail art supplies and techniques too. Such a contrast when compared to herย mom who didnt care much about nail colour or nail art.

I must admit though, that she is really good at it and has had good time with the different kinds of nail colours that are available these days, thanks to her indulgent chitti, who also loves her nails and nail colour. Its a aunt-neice combo thats hard to ignore ๐Ÿ˜€

These days, Ammu encourages to sport long nails and pampers me by painting them herself !! One lucky mom I am .. feel blessed ๐Ÿ™‚

K is for kisses :)

Yes… tiny tiny sweet ones ! The kids are growing up and there’ve been lots of changes. they’ve become more independent in their day-to-day activities and are learning newer things each day. But what remains unchanged through all this are the kisses n hugs!

At times… there used to be tiny wars too! On who kisses first and so on. Thankfully, this seems to have been resolved between the two ๐Ÿ™‚

No matter what the mood , when leaving home or when entering home, the kiss has become customary… a ritual of sorts. Feel blessed and a sense of peace prevails…such is the power of the tightย hug n the sweet kiss ๐Ÿ™‚

Growing up!

Its 7 years and 400 posts, since I started on this journey of blogging !! Long time indeed. I had not thought that I would keep this going for so long. But thanks to memes such as ABC Wednesdays, I’m able to infuse some amount of life into it from time to time and keep it going.

The kids are growing up and there is less and less of them on this blog. Nevertheless, their witty come-backs are still in place and they continue to amaze and entertain us. Just that I’m no longer able to keep ace with them, in terms of writing it all down! They make life worth living, in-spite of the feeling of exasperation that they lead us to from time to time ! ๐Ÿ™‚

And… along we them, we as parents, are growing up too! Its been a journey of learning, unlearning, relearning , not exactly in that order though. Its like a constant state of flux , sometimes happening in an orderly manner and sometimes, all at once , like epiphanies!!

The intent is to grow up as mindful parents. Though there are many difficult instances that test us and question ourselves and our decisions, we believe in our kids, in the fact that they’ll turn out OK. We trust in God’s grace and in our intent to groom them into sensitive and responsible individuals. And, being mindful is what I believe will help us grow into the parents that our kids need, to grow in an environment of trust and support.

Speaking of growing up, here is a poem that I love and one that I try to live by over and over again… In bold, the lines that most speak to me…and the lines after those are very powerful ones!

Sometimes Growth Is Just Seeing It Sooner

Sometimes growth is just seeing it sooner.

You see sooner that you are silencing your voice.

You see sooner that you are acting out of fear.

You see sooner that you are projecting the past on to the present.

You see sooner thatย youย are the one acting crazy, not them.

Because you did the work, you see it sooner.

Until our last breaths, weโ€™ll keep missing the mark.

We will dim our light and betray ourselves.

We will cause harm to those we love.

But if we stay awake, we can learn to course correct sooner.

Stay awake and you might see it this year โ€” and not let it extend for a decade

Stay awake and you might see it this week โ€” and not let it extend for a year.

Stay awake and you might can see it this hour โ€” and not let it extend for a week.

Stay awake and youโ€™ll receive those moments of grace, those crystal ones,

when in the instant โ€” before the first choice, the first word, the first act

you will catch it

right the moment of its beginning

and choose differently.

The turnaround is the most important part of the flight path.

When you make it, you move the whole world forward.

You plant a seed of love in the ground,

and all those who come after you thank you.

This is a poem by Tara Mohr. Hope you liked it ย too ๐Ÿ™‚

Wonderful and awe-inspiring..isnt it !!

Monday musings – D is for didi ! :)

Didi is the Hindi/Bengali/Marathi word for sis. And I guess its the same in many of the other languages spoken in North India.

And, didi is what Adi calls Ammu. I’m not sure if I’ve written about this fact earlier. Its the sweetest thing ever, especially when they’re in a good mood, and when playing /getting along well with each other.

The most amusing one is when Adi says something and turns around to get a confirmation saying ‘Yes na didi ?’ Its cutest, most heartwarming one for us. Makes us send out a prayer pronto! ๐Ÿ™‚

Pics of the duo.. in the balcony, busy solving some puzzles on a warm winter afternoon.. and me being a compulsive clicker couldn’t miss it now..could I ย ๐Ÿ™‚

And, to #Microblog Mondays. This is first one I’m linking here.

The thing that I most missed in the year 2015 is vacation! And, vacation to me, as for most people, is closely linked to travel. Somehow, for most part of the year, I did not go on a trip. Neither a family trip nor a team outing! Except for a quick one to KR Nagar, for sister’s treatment, from where we were taken by our friend and host, to a temple nearby. The temple is situated along the banks of a river and we were totally surprised and grateful to be there that day!

However, starved as I was of a real vacation, I planned a quick break during Dasara. Just Ammu and me! It was the first trip that we took together. We met my friends in Mysore and had a good time with them. Ammu enjoyed it too and she was super happy to be with me…just the two of us! Something that she always looks forward to ๐Ÿ™‚

I’d hoped that it would be the beginning of more such journeys and sure enough, we’ve already planned another! I had this desire to take her to Belgaum, my birthplace. And, show her around… the school me and sisters went to, the area we lived in and meet up some of my childhood friends who still live there. And, as if in answer, the universe has decided to make it happen!

Its my friend’s brother’s wedding on the 25th, in Belgaum, and I’m all set to go! By flight !! It will be my first ever journey by flight and Ammu’s too ๐Ÿ™‚ She doesnt know about it yet, and we’re sure she’ll be very very excited when she learns of this.

So, a couple of quick short breaks .. of different kinds when compared to previous years. But just as exciting and fulfilling! I’m glad how things have turned out and hoping we’ll have a good vacation this Christmas season ๐Ÿ™‚

This post is my entry for the letter V at ABC Wednesdays! Glad that I could make it this week too ๐Ÿ™‚ … just in time ๐Ÿ˜‰

F is for Family!

Fun, Family, Friends, Faith … the ‘F’ words that I heart !!

Family and faith have been my greatest strengths in life. I cannot stress enough about the importance of a supportive family. One which nourishes you… helps you grow and evolve into yourself.. one which respects and loves you for what you areย .. I feel truly blessed to be born into such a family.

Family has seen me through all my ups and downs…has been the sponge/cushion that has absorbed all that I’ve hurled at it during my darkest days and gave me back the strength, the confidence that I needed …to get myself back up from the dumps!.. indeed to spring back to life!!

My faith in my family and in the supreme power is what keeps me going. The bond with family has, over the years, transformed into a beautiful one…that of an everlasting friendship! We spend a lot of time with each other … out of necessity and habit… but more for the kinship that we provide each other.

Fun times are mostly family times. Festivals, birthdays, outings… nothing is complete without the whole family getting together!! Feel blessed and ever grateful. ๐Ÿ™‚
