SoftyPink n GloriousRed

…. the colours of life with my kids

This parenting jig is a tough one. We’re at a stage.. somewhere in the middle of a transition from the old order into a new one! I believe I’m among a generation of parents who are trying their best to conform to the new norms. Who are among those that listened to their parents and now, are compelled,by circumstances, to listen their kids as well!! I’m sure many would agree with this and relate to the fact that we’re wondering if we are the parent(s) or our kids are.

For one, the confusion arises from trying to be a friendly parent. From the outset, I wanted to be a friendly parent. But in one of the parenting counselling sessions at school, we were told to be a parent and a friend, not a friendly parent. Guess I’d got it all wrong. I went into the friend mode first itself and now its become quite difficult to be in that mode when all I want is to whack senses into the young one! Ha ha.

She adores me no end and for her there’s nothing more she loves in the world than being with me.At the same time she’s her own person, which is good, but not when it comes across as uncaring and insensitive to others around her who care a lot about her.

I feel good about the fact that she’s open with me about everything that goes on, but definitely not that great when she openly defies me on every single thing that I try to discipline her on. I honestly value good manners, ethics and a certain amount of discipline, more than anything else. But when these are not uppermost on her agenda, it annoys me no end. I wonder if its just her age or if its me that’s not doing it right… Sigh!

From the drafts. Edited today to add Adi’s creation 🙂

The quilling spree continues! This time she was not inspired enough to make ornaments like before. Instead, she wanted to try her hand at advanced techniques and was expecting me to get her the tools for that. She also complained that she had quilling strips in boring colours. whatever that means!!

Somehow, I did not see the need for advanced tools till she honed her skills a bit more. I convinced her to make use of all the strips that she has and make some stuff, anything that interests her. So, she’s been at it since past few days.

Here’s a card that she made incorporating the different patterns..

Bouquet of flowers

Adi is also inspired !! This is what I found when I came home today 🙂

Work in progress.. pretty aint it 🙂

N is for nail art

From the drafts… after having waited in vain for some pics !

Ammu has always been fascinated by nail colour. Come weekends or holidays her first request would be to apply nail colour and mehendi !! And boy! she would be the happiest when I gave her the green signal 😀

There was a time a couple of years ago when she’d become so obsessed with nail colour, she would apply remove apply remove until she felt satisfied with the choice of colour. I had to resort to hiding anything nail related 😦 She even went to the extent of taking the nail enamel to the bathroom so she could avoid scrutiny. I was shocked when I learnt of this. Later I decided to just let her be and gave her access to all the stuff. Thankfully, slowly she got out of that habit.

But, of course, her love for nail colour is still very strong. Now, also into nail art since almost an year or more. She also downloaded some game that allows her to paint and decorate nails!

On one occasion she was bold enough to compliment a neighbour for her nail art. And, not surprisingly, she was invited to have her nails painted too!! She knows quite a bit about nail art supplies and techniques too. Such a contrast when compared to her mom who didnt care much about nail colour or nail art.

I must admit though, that she is really good at it and has had good time with the different kinds of nail colours that are available these days, thanks to her indulgent chitti, who also loves her nails and nail colour. Its a aunt-neice combo thats hard to ignore 😀

These days, Ammu encourages to sport long nails and pampers me by painting them herself !! One lucky mom I am .. feel blessed 🙂

K is for kisses :)

Yes… tiny tiny sweet ones ! The kids are growing up and there’ve been lots of changes. they’ve become more independent in their day-to-day activities and are learning newer things each day. But what remains unchanged through all this are the kisses n hugs!

At times… there used to be tiny wars too! On who kisses first and so on. Thankfully, this seems to have been resolved between the two 🙂

No matter what the mood , when leaving home or when entering home, the kiss has become customary… a ritual of sorts. Feel blessed and a sense of peace prevails…such is the power of the tight hug n the sweet kiss 🙂

Monday musings – D is for didi ! :)

Didi is the Hindi/Bengali/Marathi word for sis. And I guess its the same in many of the other languages spoken in North India.

And, didi is what Adi calls Ammu. I’m not sure if I’ve written about this fact earlier. Its the sweetest thing ever, especially when they’re in a good mood, and when playing /getting along well with each other.

The most amusing one is when Adi says something and turns around to get a confirmation saying ‘Yes na didi ?’ Its cutest, most heartwarming one for us. Makes us send out a prayer pronto! 🙂

Pics of the duo.. in the balcony, busy solving some puzzles on a warm winter afternoon.. and me being a compulsive clicker couldn’t miss it now..could I  🙂

Book love :)

Yes.. here I am again talking about the kids’ love for books and for reading! Isnt that wonderful 🙂 Their love for books has grown by leaps and bounds and it makes us brim with joy when we see them in love and content in the company of books! There’s a sense of peace, of fulfillment and almost an of achievement of some rare kind! The feeling cannot be expressed completely in words, me thinks 🙂

We decided to gift them books for Christmas/New Year, instead of toys. They were overjoyed to receive books as gifts! Adi unwrapped the book and went straight to the couch and started reading it. It didnt bother him that the book was titled Little Women and was indeed meant for Ammu! It was a rare sight to behold, the pose captured forever in our memories. He’s done reading Black Beauty and Robinson Crusoe since then, and I was truly surprised when I learnt of this. He even narrated the story for me, sensing my disbelief 🙂

One day he came to me with a book and was excitedly telling me that I’m better coz I gave him a ‘fat’ book whereas his dad never does. It was so cute and amusing! Seeing his enthu, I asked him to pick ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’.. a book that I have preserved for so long. It is not in a very good condition, but it got him excited nevertheless.

Ammu, on her part, devours all the books that she can and is always hungry for more. Every week, she comes home and excitedly tells us all about the book she picked from her school library, about her friend who reads more than her and finishes reading so quickly. Books and book stories.. we’re all eager for more!

It also surprised us one day, when both Ammu and Adi insisted on picking up books from a book seller on the pavement, on our way back from dance class! We did pick a couple. Some days though, we’re left with no choice but to persuade them against buying more books!! Space and budget constraints… sigh!

Books are now prized possessions… companions during commute and also at bed time! What more can a book lover parent want !! 🙂

The 18th round of the meme ABC Wednesdays has begun. Linking this one to the letter B… just in time as always.

Art love!

We are a family of art lovers! 🙂 Not serious art aficionados in a strict sense but we love to create/dabble in art. A large part of my childhood vacations were occupied with drawing, painting. I would then randomly showcase my creations on the walls. Mom was always very encouraging and never stopped me from putting up stuff on the walls 🙂

I mostly dabbled in water colours on paper. Later on, sis 2 learnt nib painting during her college days and I picked it up from her. We made a couple of paintings and they adorn the walls at dad’s home. With the kids, colouring and painting become a fun activity that they loved! Lots of drawing, colouring , painting over the years 🙂 It is still a favourite past time for Ammu. She now loves to browse, and draws inspiration from the world wide web!

More recently, sis 2 took up painting on glass, glass bottles specifically. This love became active again after a spell of dormancy! Glass, paints and other stuff were duly purchased and the kids and she came up with a few paintings on glass. Yet to be framed… here are the pics..

Sketches! Ammu loves making sketches these days.. We’re quite in awe 🙂

Hoping this happy, colourful, artsy streak stays alive and keeps us alive to the sheer joy of creating! 🙂

The thing that I most missed in the year 2015 is vacation! And, vacation to me, as for most people, is closely linked to travel. Somehow, for most part of the year, I did not go on a trip. Neither a family trip nor a team outing! Except for a quick one to KR Nagar, for sister’s treatment, from where we were taken by our friend and host, to a temple nearby. The temple is situated along the banks of a river and we were totally surprised and grateful to be there that day!

However, starved as I was of a real vacation, I planned a quick break during Dasara. Just Ammu and me! It was the first trip that we took together. We met my friends in Mysore and had a good time with them. Ammu enjoyed it too and she was super happy to be with me…just the two of us! Something that she always looks forward to 🙂

I’d hoped that it would be the beginning of more such journeys and sure enough, we’ve already planned another! I had this desire to take her to Belgaum, my birthplace. And, show her around… the school me and sisters went to, the area we lived in and meet up some of my childhood friends who still live there. And, as if in answer, the universe has decided to make it happen!

Its my friend’s brother’s wedding on the 25th, in Belgaum, and I’m all set to go! By flight !! It will be my first ever journey by flight and Ammu’s too 🙂 She doesnt know about it yet, and we’re sure she’ll be very very excited when she learns of this.

So, a couple of quick short breaks .. of different kinds when compared to previous years. But just as exciting and fulfilling! I’m glad how things have turned out and hoping we’ll have a good vacation this Christmas season 🙂

This post is my entry for the letter V at ABC Wednesdays! Glad that I could make it this week too 🙂 … just in time 😉

Diwali 2015 – Rangoli…n Rays of light!..

This Diwali, it has been raining non stop and I almost decided to write about the Rain! But the thought of rangolis and the rays of light lit me up and lo the U turn !! 🙂

What looked like a dreary and uneventful Diwali due to illness n dull rainy weather turned into a lovely one thanks to Ammu’s enthu…yet again! Diyas, Rangolis, dressing up – quintessential fun Diwali! sans any of the Diwali sweets n savouries though…

On day 1 of Diwali, Ammu was feeling restless and was looking for something to do. Luckily I had a stock of unused diyas from last year. I suggested that she try painting those and she was thrilled at the idea. I expected her to finish just a couple and give up. But post lunch, the enthu caught on and sis joined her. Together they painted a dozen diyas… in various colours and designs! Totally unexpected 🙂

I on my part managed to decorate a single used CD as diya holder, with some glitter from her craft supplies.

Painted diyas

We made rangolis in the evenings. It was wet and windy outside and no way were the diyas going to stay lit even for a moment. On day 2 and day 3 we made rangolis inside the home just so we could place diyas all around 🙂

The Rangolis

The diyas… all lit. Rays of light to dispel the darkness…the essence of Diwali!!

Hope you all folks had a fun filled Diwali as well !!
