Akasha mallige #Thursday tree love

Literally speaking, jasmine in/of the sky! This tree is named after the jasmine-like sweet smelling flowers that bloom on the tall trees and seem to belong to the sky !

Also known as mara mallige, the Indian Cork tree is a beautiful sight to behold, especially when in bloom. Not as spectacular as the jacarandas, tabebuias, gulmohur or the african tulip but hard to miss once you spot the blooms, especially the ones strewn on the ground.

Millingtonia hortensis is its botanical name. Interestingly, its the only one species belonging to this genus. You can read more about it here.

The akasha mallige reminds me of my dance class. One tall tree right next to the room where we practised…flowers strewn all around, when in bloom… something I never failed to spot. I would pick up a few of them to take in the fragrance, then carefully take them home and put them in a glass of water..to make them last as long as they can…

This year, I spotted a row of trees in bloom but could not get good pics of those as I was driving past. Luckily though, I spotted a couple of trees at a different spot and happily clicked away 🙂

The flowers on the car dashboard…

    1. Sharing the fragrance…that would be wonderful Archana.
You’re right…the flowers are high up on the trees. But luckily I spotted this tree which is of medium height and in bloom! Perfect for me, since I’m usually clicking using my phone 🙂

  2. Hmmmmm…… The fragrance & sunbirds prancing around them 🤍

I remember this tree from my trip to Isha Yoga Centre in foothills of Vellingiri. I too picked some to carry back to the room & also tucked a few in my hair 😂😂

Good you managed to enjoy them at your pace and share the photos 👍🏻

Thanks for sharing & taking me down memory lane 🤍
