Strictly speaking, this is a shrub, not a tree.
I spotted this bush with pretty pink berries, in a resort we’d been to for a team outing, a couple of years ago.
The whole day had been spent in various team building activities… I’d also managed to click a few pictures of the ambience and of some of the trees around…
At the fag end of the day, tired and weary, a few of us went looking for the rest room. Nestled behind it was this beauty! The pink berries immediately caught my attention. Imagine my delight at spotting it 😀
The others were amazed too, as none of us had seen this plant earlier. Then, a quick photo session ensued. We couldnt miss it now, could we ?!!
Later, I found out that this is Carissa carandas of the Apocyanacea family.

Carissa carandas is a species of flowering shrub in the family Apocynaceae. It produces berry-sized fruits that are commonly used as a condiment in Indian pickles and spices. It is a hardy, drought-tolerant plant that thrives well in a wide range of soils. Common names in English include Bengal currant, Christ’s thorn, carandas plum and karanda.

New to me! It bears berries and blooms at the same time. The leaves remind me (slightly) of our rhododendron. I wonder if I will ever see one of these shrubs.

Hey Alana, yes you’re right..I’d been so fixated on the berries didn’t realise it’s odd that it’s flowering at the same time !

Yummmm…… You took me back to childhood days. I remember this growing as a hedge and I used to pluck one or two and have them …. Karonda as we call it. Their pickle is tasty too. Very nice post 😊

Oh my god! It’s been decades I have seen the Karonda. Yes, that’s what we used to call it at my grandmother’s place. We had tons of shrubs of these and Nani used to make Jam out of this. It has a strong sour taste that I never relished but in Jams, it tuned out amazing. So glad you shared this and brought some beautiful memories. Thanks, Priya. See you around tomorrow.

Beauty!!!! After googling the name I got to know that its well-known berry for me!! We call it as Kaulikai.. Its pickle is awesome. I had not seen the shrub so far but eaten the pickle.

Yes..thats right Shipa. I too was familiar with Kaulikai, though i’d seen only the green variety. Never the pink one…
