A dear blogger friend hosts the BookBytes linky at her book blog Beat About The Book , on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. I love reading the lil nuggets that she posts and am excited to post one myself, today π
I haven’t been reading a lot of books lately, at least not as much as I used to. So, when I came across a reco for Becoming by Michelle Obama on Beat About The Book, I became very interested. The title of the book seemed to hold a lot of promise and it called out to me… felt like it would be my kind of book ..if you know what I mean..
Then, over the next few days I heard about ‘Audible’ from friends who were enjoying using it. I was a bit skeptical though, wondering if it could truly work for me. But Becoming available on Audible, that too in Michelle Obama’s own voice! Now, that was a clincher and I instantly signed up!!
And boy! was I glad!! It was the best read this year and felt so close to heart even though it is about a different kind of people living thousands of miles away!! And the closing lines are the gist of everything thats in the book and more. Very pertinent for the times we live in. Above all else, it stuck a chord so deep …the feeling is inexplicable.
“Lets invite one another in. Maybe then, we can begin to fear less, to make fewer assumptions, to let go of the biases and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the ways we are the same. Its not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story and using your authentic voice. There’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.”
Do join in and link up if you have a favorite quote or passage to share!!
P.S: I’d loved the passage so much that I had instantly typed it out (while re-playing it on a loop) and posted it on FB!
P.P.S: I think I’ll do the bookbyte on all the Tuesdays this month! What say? π π
Oh this is fantastic. So good to have you join in. Becoming is one of my favourite autobiographies. What you said was so true – it’s amazing how a book written by a person from a whole different world can feel so relatable. I must try the audible version though I continue to be unsure about audio books.

Thanks OM! I feel that audio books may not work for all genres and especially depends on the voice we hear. Do give it a try π
